Avoin teoshaku nykyaikaisten k\u00e4mmenelle mahtuvien taideteosten kokoamiseksi sek\u00e4 taidehallin seinien lainaaminen kahden kokeneen muralistin k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n ovat k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6n eleit\u00e4, joiden p\u00e4\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4n\u00e4 on delegoida p\u00e4\u00e4t\u00f6svaltaa taiteilijoille ja&nbsp;mahdollistaa kansainv\u00e4lisen tapahtuman j\u00e4rjest\u00e4minen kokoontumista ja matkustamista rajoittavina aikoina.Yhdenk\u00e4\u00e4n instituution ei kannattaisi pyrki\u00e4 t\u00e4ydellisesti hallitsemaan t\u00e4m\u00e4nkaltaista prosessia.&nbsp;Delegoiminen ei tarkoita vallasta luopumista, ja ohjelman luominen on mink\u00e4 tahansa taidehallin ydinteht\u00e4v\u00e4, riippumatta siit\u00e4, kuinka paljon kontrollia se katsoo parhaaksi luovuttaa toisten \u2013 taiteilijoiden, yleis\u00f6n tai joskus vaikkapa rahoittajien tai viranomaisten \u2013 k\u00e4siin jonkin tietyn hankkeen kohdalla.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Nyt avattavassa n\u00e4yttelyss\u00e4 Kohta p\u00e4\u00e4tti koetella avoimen teoshaun mahdollisuuksia. Markkinoimme&nbsp;n\u00e4yttely\u00e4 kansainv\u00e4lisesti, etsien n\u00e4kyvyytt\u00e4 erityisesti Suomessa ja Ruotsissa, ja kutsuimme kenet tahansa itsens\u00e4 taiteilijaksi identifioivan l\u00e4hett\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n meille&nbsp;<em>manuportin<\/em>. \u201cManuport\u201d on englanninkielinen, arkeologian termi luonnossa esiintyv\u00e4lle esineelle, tavallisesti kivelle, jonka ihmiset ovat tallettaneet tai kuljettaneet paikasta toiseen kuitenkaan sit\u00e4 muokkaamatta.Vanhin tunnettu manuportti on Makapansgatin kivi, jaspiskiven lohkare, joka on muinoin matkannut ihmisrodun vanhimpien sukulaisten k\u00e4mmenell\u00e4 nykyisen Etel\u00e4-Afrikan alueella, mist\u00e4 se l\u00f6ydettiin 1925. Kivest\u00e4 tekee kiinnostavan (ihmiskasvoja muistuttavan, mahdollisesti parannellun muotonsa ohella) se, ett\u00e4 luola, josta se kaivettiin esiin yhdess\u00e4 kolme miljoonaa vuotta vanhojen&nbsp;<em>Australopithecus africanuksen&nbsp;<\/em>luiden kanssa, sijaitsee yli nelj\u00e4n kilometrin p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4 l\u00e4himm\u00e4st\u00e4 jaspis-esiintym\u00e4st\u00e4.<br><br>Tavallisesti el\u00e4imi\u00e4 tai ihmisen ruumiinosia muistuttavat esihistorialliset&nbsp;<em>readymadet&nbsp;<\/em><br>tuntuvat osoittavan, ett\u00e4 ihmisen varhaisimmatkin esi-is\u00e4t olivat kykenevi\u00e4 hy\u00f6ty\u00e4 tavoittelemattomaan kognitioon, esteettiseen&nbsp;arvonantoon ja mahdollisesti kielelliseen ajatteluunkin, ja ett\u00e4 kuvallinen ajattelu on sanomattoman vanhaa, joka tapauksessa varhaisimpia s\u00e4ilyneit\u00e4 luolamaalauksia huomattavasti vanhempaa.Kohtan avoimen teoshaun oli m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 saattaa alulle maailmanlaajuinen kollektiivinen hanke manuporttien muinaisen perinteen palauttamiseksi tulevaisuuteen. Samalla p\u00e4\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4n\u00e4mme oli her\u00e4tell\u00e4 eloon viime vuosisadan taiteellista internationalismia, eik\u00e4 v\u00e4hiten postitaiteen sek\u00e4 \u201dkeskustaa\u201d ett\u00e4 \u201dperiferiaa\u201d&nbsp;osallistavassa muodossa. Olemme tarkoituksellisesti asettaneet taiteilijoiden vapauden instituution&nbsp;arvottavan ja kategorisoivan oikeuden edelle, emmek\u00e4 alistaneet yli kolmeasataa vastaanottamaamme&nbsp;teosta mink\u00e4\u00e4nlaisen esivalintaan.Kuitenkin taidehallin on aina oltava vuoropuhelussa niin kotimaisen kuin kansainv\u00e4lisenkin taidekent\u00e4n kanssa, ja pyritt\u00e4v\u00e4 yhdist\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n kokeellinen ja ainutkertainen. Siksi olemme kutsuneet mukaan kaksi&nbsp;kokenutta muralistia, joiden tilap\u00e4isteokset maalataan yli n\u00e4yttelyn p\u00e4\u00e4tytty\u00e4.<br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/kohta.us16.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=b3f62c272c8e3041d935841ef&amp;id=0d5191c9bd&amp;e=faf3232a2d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Oscar Chan Yik Long<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;(Hong Kong\/Ranska, 1988) toimii niin Hong Kongissa ja Manner-Kiinassa kuin&nbsp;L\u00e4nsi-Euroopan taidekent\u00e4ll\u00e4. H\u00e4n on tunnettu figuratiivisista mustavalkoisista hiilell\u00e4 ja grafiitilla sek\u00e4 muilla tekniikoilla toteutetuista t\u00f6ist\u00e4\u00e4n. Chanin teosten kuvasto ammentaa it\u00e4maisesta mytologiasta, viime&nbsp;vuosisadan elokuvataiteesta (erityisesti kauhuelokuvista) sek\u00e4 1800-luvun lopun l\u00e4nsimaisesta grafiikasta.Chan on luonut Kohtan pienemp\u00e4\u00e4n n\u00e4yttelytilaan immersiivisen installaation, joka koostuu kahdesta elementist\u00e4: kiinalaisella musteella tehdyst\u00e4 sein\u00e4maalauksesta&nbsp;<em>Pun-Gu&nbsp;<\/em>(2021), sek\u00e4 taiteilijan piirustusten mukaan toteutetusta py\u00f6re\u00e4st\u00e4 puuvillamatosta&nbsp;<em>Kosminen muna&nbsp;<\/em>(2021). Molempien l\u00e4ht\u00f6kohtana on&nbsp;kiinalainen luomismyytti. Aikojen alussa Pun-Gu, olennoista ensimm\u00e4inen, jonka nimi rakentuu sanoista ker\u00e4 (alunperin \u201dalku\u201d) ja muinainen (alunperin \u201dkurpitsa\u201d), syntyi kosmosta kannatelleesta munasta.Pun-Gulla ei ollut lapsia tai sukulaisia, mutta h\u00e4net kuvataan toisinaan \u2013 kuten Chanin riehakkaan yksityiskohtaisessa kalligrafisessa muraalissa \u2013 yhdess\u00e4 kiinalaisen mytologian \u201dNelj\u00e4n el\u00e4imen\u201d kanssa: sinivihre\u00e4n lohik\u00e4\u00e4rmeen (puu, kev\u00e4t, it\u00e4), punaisen linnun (tuli, kes\u00e4, etel\u00e4), valkoisen tiikerin (metalli, syksy, l\u00e4nsi) ja mustan kilpikonnan (vesi, talvi, pohjoinen).<br><br><strong>Pavel Miku\u0161ev&nbsp;<\/strong>(Komin tasavalta, Ven\u00e4j\u00e4, 1962) on Ven\u00e4j\u00e4n fennougrilaisten tasavaltojen kuvataiteessa, teatterissa ja kirjallisuudessa 1990-alusta tunnuslauseen \u201dmenneisyyteen nojaten, tulevaisuuden puolesta\u201d alla vaikuttaneen etnofuturistisen suuntauksen johtohahmoja.<br><br>Miku\u0161evin maalaustaide&nbsp;yhdist\u00e4\u00e4 monenlaisia aineksia \u2013 muun muassa Perman arkeologisten objektien (800 ekr.\u20131200 jkr.) tyyli\u00e4; muinaista, Australian alkuper\u00e4iskansojen edelleen harjoittamaa pistemaalauksen tekniikkaa, sek\u00e4 1920-luvun ven\u00e4l\u00e4ist\u00e4&nbsp;avant-gardea \u2013 el\u00e4v\u00e4iseksi ja v\u00e4riloistoiseksi, silti \u00e4lylliseksi synteesiksi ornamentiikkaa ja narratiivisuutta.Miku\u0161ev on luonut Kohtan isompaan n\u00e4yttelysaliin&nbsp;<em>Sienen hehkun&nbsp;<\/em>(2021), teoksen, jonka nimi viittaa tieteelliseen termiin (ven\u00e4j\u00e4ksi&nbsp;<em>gribnoe sijanie<\/em>), ja sit\u00e4 kautta Moskovan 1970-luvun konseptualistien kuvataiteen diskurssiin tuomaan psykedeliaan. Teos koostuu nelj\u00e4st\u00e4 mustalle taustalle toteutetusta moniv\u00e4risest\u00e4 pistemaalauksesta, joista kukin kattaa kokonaisen sein\u00e4n, sek\u00e4 omaa itsen\u00e4isen otsikon:&nbsp;<em>Etno-barokki<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>V\u00e4r\u00e4htely<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Kumarrus esi-isille<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Alas ja oikealle, yl\u00f6s ja vasemmalle.<\/em>N\u00e4yttelyn j\u00e4rjest\u00e4\u00e4 Taidehalli Kohta.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kohta.us16.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=b3f62c272c8e3041d935841ef&amp;id=96be1fc1f8&amp;e=faf3232a2d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>M.A. Castr\u00e9nin seura<\/strong><\/a>, joka tukee Suomen ja suomalaisugrilaisten kansojen v\u00e4list\u00e4 kulttuurivaihtoa, on yst\u00e4v\u00e4llisesti edesauttanut Pavel Miku\u0161evin osallistumista.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kohta.us16.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=b3f62c272c8e3041d935841ef&amp;id=7a7e3fec30&amp;e=faf3232a2d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>HIAP<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;on&nbsp;puolestaan tukenut Oscar Chan Yik Longin osallistumista tarjoamalla h\u00e4nelle ty\u00f6tilat Suomenlinnassa helmikuussa 2021.<a href=\"https:\/\/kohta.us16.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=b3f62c272c8e3041d935841ef&amp;id=9b627c9227&amp;e=faf3232a2d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>&nbsp;EXIT Gallery<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;Hong Kongissa on auttanut teokseen sis\u00e4ltyv\u00e4n maton tuotannossa.<br><br>Armenialainen kuraattori&nbsp;<strong>Sona Stepanyan&nbsp;<\/strong>on auttanut Kohtaa n\u00e4yttelyn j\u00e4rjest\u00e4misess\u00e4 osana Tukholman yliopiston maisteriopintojaan.<br><br><br>Manuportteja saapui l\u00e4hes 300 taiteilijalta, 35:st\u00e4 eri maasta, viidelt\u00e4 Kohta dedicates its 20th exhibition to an issue that will always be highly political, no matter how much intelligence is invested into preventing it from being politicised: artistic freedom and what institutions and curators can do to protect and promote it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018First International Festival of Manuports\u2019 makes no grand policy statement about the freedom of art, but it does attempt to further the freedom of artists through experimental practice. The open call for contemporary palm-sized artworks and the hand-over of the kunsthalle\u2019s walls to two experienced muralists are concrete gestures meant to delegate decision-making to artists and allow us to stage an international event in a time of continued restrictions for travelling and gathering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No institution could or should aspire to fully control such a setup. Yet the words \u2018gesture\u2019 and \u2018stage\u2019 are selected with care. Delegating doesn\u2019t mean abdicating, and overall programming is always the prime task of every art institution, regardless of how much control it chooses to relinquish to others \u2013 artists, audiences, sometimes even funders or regulators \u2013 for a given venture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this exhibition Kohta decided to test the feasibility of the open call format.\u00a0We advertised globally, and specifically in Finland and Sweden, asking anyone self-identifying as an artist to send us a \u2018manuport\u2019. This is the archaeological term for\u00a0\u2018a natural object, especially a stone, that has been carried and deposited somewhere by humans but has not been artificially shaped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The oldest known manuport is the so-called Makapansgat pebble, a piece of jasperite that once fit into the palm of one of the oldest relatives of humankind roaming what is now South Africa, where it was discovered in 1925. What makes the pebble so interesting (apart from its clear resemblance to a face and the doubt as to whether its shape has been enhanced) is that it was found four kilometres away from the nearest natural source of jasperite, together with bones of the&nbsp;<em>Australopithecus africanus&nbsp;<\/em>that are three million years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such prehistoric readymades, usually invoking animals or human body parts, seem to indicate that even our earliest ancestors were capable of non-utilitarian cognition, aesthetic appreciation and possibly language, and that image-thinking is almost unimaginably old, certainly predating the earliest surviving cage paintings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kohta proposed a world-wide collective exercise in \u2018futuring\u2019 this ancient heritage. At the same time we wanted to revive the artistic internationalism of the last century, not least the mail art movement with its important contributions from both \u2018centres\u2019 and \u2018peripheries\u2019. By not putting the more than 300 submissions through any form of selection we privileged the freedom of artists to create and exhibit over the right of the institution to judge and organise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, a kunsthalle must always have a show that communicates with the world of art at home and abroad and hopefully unites the experimental and the exquisite. We have therefore also invited two artists with extensive experience of making murals, especially temporary ones that will be painted over once the show is over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oscarchan.com\/\"><strong>Oscar Chan Yik Long<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;(Hong Kong\/France, 1988) is active in the Hong Kong, Mainland Chinese and Western European art scenes and is known for his black-and-white figurative work in ink, graphite and other techniques. His imagery references Oriental mythology, twentieth-century cinema (notably horror movies) and late-nineteenth-century Occidental graphic art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chan has made an immersive installation for Kohta\u2019s smaller space, consisting of two elements: a wall painting in Chinese ink titled\u00a0<em>Pun-Gu\u00a0<\/em>(2021), and\u00a0<em>Cosmic Egg\u00a0<\/em>(2021), a circular woollen rug manufactured according to his design. Both refer to the central Chinese creation myth. In the beginning of time Pun-Gu, the first being whose name consists of the words for \u2018coil\u2019 (originally \u2018beginning\u2019) and \u2018ancient\u2019 (originally \u2018calabash\u2019), was born from an egg that held the entire cosmos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pun-Gu had no children or other relatives, but he is sometimes \u2013 as in Chan\u2019s riotously detailed and calligraphic mural \u2013 depicted together with the \u2018Four Guardians\u2019 of Chinese mythology: the azure dragon (wood, spring, east), the vermillion bird (fire, summer, south), the white tiger (metal, autumn, west) and the black tortoise (water, winter, north).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pavel Mikushev&nbsp;<\/strong>(Republic of Komi, Russian Federation, 1962) is a leading member of the ethno-futurist movement within visual art, theatre and literature in Russia\u2019s Finno-Ugric republics, constituted in the early 1990s under the motto \u2018Leaning on the Past, Working for the Future\u2019. His painting fuses inspiration from various sources \u2013 among them archaeological objects in the so-called Permian animal style from ca 800 BC\u20131200 CE, the ancient art of dot painting still practiced by the original inhabitants of Australia and Russian avant-garde art of the 1920s \u2013 into a vibrant and colourful yet cerebral synthesis of the ornamental and the narrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition is organised by Kunsthalle Kohta. The&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.macastren.fi\/\"><strong>M. A. Castr\u00e9n A<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.macastren.fi\/\"><strong>ssociation<\/strong><\/a>, which promotes cultural exchange between Finland and the Finno-Ugrian minorities of the Russian Federation, has generously supported Pavel Mikushev\u2019s participation.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiap.fi\/oscar-chan-yik-long-fear-horror-and-murals\/\"><strong>HIAP<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;kindly supported Oscar Chan Yik Long\u2019s participation by offering him a studio at Suomenlinna in February 2021.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.galleryexit.com\/\"><strong>Gallery EXIT<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;in Hong Kong helped organise the production of his rug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Armenian curator&nbsp;<strong>Sona Stepanyan&nbsp;<\/strong>has helped Kohta organise this exhibition, as part of her MA in
